A team of colts cricketers from Lazio, Italy, played a match against Barnet Colts made up of players from the under-nines and upwards, at Underhill. The game was played in a friendly spirit and we made our visitors very welcome and refreshments including ice-creams were laid on after the match.
Barnet scored 143 in their 25 overs, with the three Rossington brothers (Dan, Chris and Adam) making significant contributions.
Lazio quickly got behind the clock but some entertaining batting towards the end of their innings meant they finished 21 runs short of the Barnet score.

JULY 2000

Congratulations to Barnet's Under 15s and manager Phil Jones on winning the Middlesex East Area League. A win by 17 runs over Enfield meant that they needed to play off against North London A to decide the area title. North London batting second scored 106-5 and just failed by two runs to match Barnet's total of 108-9. Well done Under 15s !
They now progress to the County League Knock Out Championship.

JUNE 2000

Thanks due to Ian Laney, manager/coach for the under 13's with news of his squad's matches: 3 abandoned, two won and two lost. Both victories coming against Finchley, with Robbie Gibson scoring 39 not out (and retired). Defeat at Winchmore Hill in spite of a fine knock of 25 not out by Chris Rossington. Barnet overcame Mill Hill Village in the 'Slip Trios County Cup', a competition in which we have a tradition of success at Barnet (twice winners, and last year 3rd).

A report just in from Secretary Trevor Chambers:- Under 11's v Southgate Adelaide:-

Southgate Adelaide scored 91-8 in their 20 overs. All our bowlers bowled very well and kept a tight grip on the game. The pick of our bowlers was Callum Chesterman who took 3 wickets for only 6 runs. We then scored 93-5 wickets and so won the game by 5 wickets. The top scorers for us were Callum Chesterman (again!) who scored 15, Jamie Spencer who scored 10, Donathan Kandasamy 9 not out and Oliver Ridout 8 not out.

The Under 10's lost to Potters Bar, but improved their batting with Adam Rossington, aged 7, scoring 29 not out.

UPDATE 19th June 2000

Under 10 s Manager Malcolm Rossington rang in with the great news of his squad's first win of the season over North Middlesex. Owen Hind was outstanding in the field and skipper Jack Reynolds 37 not out steered Barnet home.

The Under 17 s played two matches in two days(June 18/19th) - and won them both !

Accurate bowling pegged Cockfosters back to 79 off their 20 overs with David Lovell taking 3 for 4 in 4 overs in a devastating spell. Darren Gerard 50 not out and Jacob Berry 14 not out put Barnet on the road to victory with an opening stand of 69 before both batsman were retired. Ian Rose and Josh Knappett saw them home with several overs in hand.

Darren Gerard..........................David Lovell

The Under 17's came up against Southgate Adelaide on Monday. This was the same Southgate Adelaide side that had dumped Barnet out of the Cup the week before. But with Josh Knappett, David Lovell, Darren Gerard and Matthew Lockwood back in the fold, Barnet fielded a full strength side and looked formidable. They compiled 136-4 in their 20 overs. Josh Knappett 44 and Darren Gerard 47 laid the platform for a good total with an opening stand of 89. David Lovell, Matthew Lockwood and Ian Rose made full use of the remaining overs to set a difficult target for their opponents of almost 7 runs an over.

Southgate's hard task was made virtually impossible by the opening bowling of Darren Gerard (who began with a wicket maiden)and Skipper Chris Norris. The change bowlers, Nick Jones and Kunj Shah took further wickets and some extremely good fielding by Barnet added to the pressure culmulating in 3 run-outs !
Southgate Adelaide batted out the remaining overs, but only managed to reduce the margain of defeat to 43 runs.

The Under 13s also played two matches in two days. They lost to North London B, although Robert Laney certainly didn't deserve to be on the losing side with a magnificent innings of 76. He dominated the innings with extras being the next highest scorer !

The following day the Under 13s won a thrilling finish v Winchmore Hill by one wicket, Callum Chesterman 36 and Chris Rossington 18 the main contributors.

The Under 15s lost by nine wickets to North London A but came back strongly to beat North London Muslims by eight wickets. They took the points v Hornsey as Hornsey failed to put out a team ! Then followed a very tight finish in the Cup against Enfield when we emerged as winners by just two runs !

MAY 2000

"Okay, we'll call it off !"

Following the wettest April on record, May looks like getting a mention too in the wettest month records. Barnet's under 10's have had five matches cancelled out of seven and just haven't had a chance to sort out their batting.

Many thanks to Phil Jones for keeping me informed about the Under 15 s. They have won three out of four in the league and are waiting to reschedule their cup match with Edmonton.

The runs have been coming with ease from Josh Knappett scoring 59 against Edmonton, Vipal Ravell 37 v N.L. Muslims and 46 v Enfield. Nick Jones hit 33 not out in the same game.

I'm still awaiting news from the other coaches about their squads. I guess they must be 'slow coaches' !
